5 more youngsters waiting to break through at White Hart Lane
Tim Sherwood started it and Tottenham’s new boss Mauricio Pochettino has continued with the process of bringing young talent into the first team at White Hart Lane. In 2014-15, Harry Kane and Ryan Mason benefitted from extended runs in the side while Nabil Bentaleb, who was a regular under Sherwood, continued to claim his slot in midfield.
Club chairman Daniel Levy has been widely urged to keep faith with Pochettino after a fifth place finish in his first season in charge and by blooding young players, the manager should continue to earn the faith of supporters.
Here are five more youngsters who can follow their counterparts and take a regular starting place in 2015-16.
Alex Pritchard
22 year old Pritchard was Brentford’s player of the season as the club came through to claim a play off place at the end of their Championship campaign. The attacking midfielder scored 12 league goals for the Bees and has proved deadly from dead ball situations around the box.
Pritchard has made one league appearance in the Premiership as a substitute for Spurs against Aston Villa at the end of 2013-14 and the logical next step is for him to be given a proper chance at the highest level. Will Tottenham give him that opportunity or is a loan stint at another Premier League club the likely option for the coming campaign?
Tom Carroll
Unlike Pritchard, 23 year old Carroll has a decent level of Premier League experience having spent last season on loan at Swansea. The England Under 21 skipper has made seven league appearances for his parent club and been a useful member of the Europa League side at the Lane.
Carroll’s accurate passing has been likened to that of former Tottenham favourite Luka Modric and having seemingly answered questions over his physicality, it must be time for Pochettino to bring him into the fold on a regular basis.
DeAndre Yedlin
Having been signed from Seattle Sounders in the summer of 2014, 21 year old Yedlin isn’t a home grown talent but is just the type of youngster that Spurs should be looking to promote. The defender already has 16 full international caps for the USA and has impressed fans during close season club friendlies in Malaysia and Australia.
With questions lingering over the form and fitness of Kyle Walker, the right back slot may be freed up for DeAndre to play a major role for his new side in 2015-16.
Harry Winks
Having made his first team debut against Partizan last season, 19 year old Winks says he is ready to battle for a place in the Spurs squad. The teenager is another deep lying midfielder in the Ryan Mason / Nabil Bentaleb mould and his performance in that Europa League match, albeit a brief cameo, showed that he has a good temperament and won’t be over-awed by the big occasion.
The next logical step however is a stint at a lower league club, hopefully a championship side, as Winks continues his footballing education.
Marcus Edwards
At just 16, it would take a huge leap of faith to expect Marcus Edwards to feature as a regular in Tottenham’s squad next season but for one day at least, a stunning goal for England Under 17s against Italy had everyone talking about him.
A possible substitute appearance in a straightforward Europa League win is all the teenager can really hope for in 2015-16 but like Pritchard, Carroll, Yedlin and Winks, Marcus Edwards proves that the future at Spurs can be a bright one.
