Brazilian defender Maxwell announces retirement from international football
The Brazilian and Paris Saint-Germain defender Maxwell has confirmed his retirement from international football after making just 10 appearances for the national team.
The 33-year-old left-back, who was a member of the 2014 World Cup squad, has also hinted that he could retire completely in the near future.
“At 33 and with the level of the competition there is, the Selecao is over for me,” As quoted by Goal.com Maxwell told radio station France Bleu. “The experience of the World Cup in Brazil was fantastic at first, but the pressure and the economic environment around us played against us.
“I do not know if I will continue playing for long, I have not decided. We’ll see in February and find out a little more. Maybe this is the end, maybe I will go on, it will depend on the desire of the club and maybe the offer that I have.”
Maxwell joined PSG from Barcelona in 2012, has scored three goals in 36 appearances for the French champions, whose current contract expires at the end of this season.
