Chelsea Must Beat Everton to Seal Third Spot
Chelsea look set to end the season without a trophy, but that does not mean their season is over. They still have plenty to play for, as the last two UEFA Champions League spots have to be decided. The Blues are locked in a tight battle with fellow London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal. If they win their remaining games, Chelsea will get the third spot and automatic entry into the Champions League group stages. Should they finish fourth, they will have to negotiate a playoff before entering the Champions League. Fifth place would mean Europa League football, and that would be a disaster for a club of Chelsea’s wealth and standing.
There are Chelsea v Everton tickets available online, which will give you the chance to see the game in person. This should be an excellent game, with both sides needing the three points for their seasons’ aspirations.
The game against Everton on the 19th of May represents a huge test for Chelsea. While the game is at Stamford Bridge, Everton are a team that cannot be underestimated. They recently emerged with a credible 0-0 draw at the Emirates against Arsenal. A similar result at Stamford Bridge would see Chelsea drop two valuable points to their rivals, something they cannot afford. It is clear that the Blues will have to be at their best; otherwise they could see their Champions League dream disappear.
This has been an unusual season, even by Chelsea’s standards. It started well as they made some impressive signings in the summer. The likes of Oscar, Eden Hazard and Marko Marin were set to usher in a new playing style. The first few months of the season went perfectly as Chelsea stood on top of the Premier League. However, a 3-2 loss to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge was the beginning of a very long slide. Chelsea relinquished their Premier League lead, went out of the Champions League group stages, and sacked manager Roberto Di Matteo.
Much to the fans dismay, Di Matteo was replaced by ex Liverpool and Valencia manager Rafa Benitez. While Benitez is an excellent coach who has won the Champions League, he is not a favorite among Chelsea fans. Their animosity for him runs deep, and they made their feelings clear by booing him for most of the season. This tension did not help matters at the club, where the team struggled to find any consistency for most of the year.
However, Chelsea made an impression in both the FA Cup and Europa League. They still have a chance to reach the Europa League final, while they made the FA Cup semi finals. These performances may not be enough to save Benitez’s job, but they should keep the fans happy until next season.
